Issues for employees of ABC companies in the metro Washington, DC community included the shortage of school age care, quality issues with regard to infant/toddler and health and safety, and lack of awareness of issues and services for elders.

Through accreditation and curriculum enhancement initiatives, the ABC was able to increase the number of school-age care slots (including after-school and summer camps) available in the Washington, DC area. The ABC is also beginning to create the infrastructure that will promote the issue of quality, including school age accreditation, family child care clusters, and a network of centers that have received trainings and mini grants to enhance quality and be more responsive to working families. Capacity to serve local elders has increased as a result of Meals on Wheels and expanded Escorted Transportation programs.
